About Mr Andrew Ker

Personal Profile

Mr Andrew Ker is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon who works at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Paisley and Ross Hall Hospital, where he specialises in the management of sporting, traumatic and degenerative conditions of the upper limb. He has a particular interest in shoulder surgery and the management of all aspects of shoulder pathology, from dealing with fractures, rotator cuff injuries and shoulder dislocations to managing shoulder arthritis.

Mr Ker was born and schooled in Glasgow, before attending Edinburgh University Medical School graduating in 2008. Whilst at Edinburgh University he also completed a BSc (Hons) in Sports Science in 2005, studying sports injury prevention, management and psychology and completing a dissertation in the management of shoulder injuries in rugby players.

Mr Ker undertook his specialist Orthopaedic Training in the West of Scotland and passed the Intercollegiate Trauma and Orthopaedic Exam in 2018, becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

In 2019, he undertook a specialist fellowship in Reconstructive Shoulder Surgery at the Universitätsklinik Balgrist in Zurich, Switzerland training under world renowned shoulder surgeon Professor Christian Gerber. Then in 2020 he completed a fellowship in Shoulder Arthroscopy and Arthroplasty in Brisbane, Australia under the supervision of A/Professor Kenneth Cutbush and A/Professor Ashish Gupta. Whilst on fellowship he gained a vast exposure to all aspects of shoulder surgery and became proficient in arthroscopic surgery for conditions such as rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability, AC joint arthritis, long head of biceps pathology and frozen shoulder; as well as open surgery for shoulder instability, such as the Latarjet procedure and shoulder replacement surgery for arthritis.

Mr Ker currently works in Clyde, where he is Lead Clinician for Trauma. His main area of interest is in the management of upper limb conditions and in particular performing shoulder arthroscopic procedures and shoulder replacement procedures. He has a particular interest in cutting edge technology for shoulder replacement surgery and routinely utilises computer-assisted planning and patient-specific instrumentation to help match the shoulder replacement to the patient’s anatomy.

He is regularly involved in teaching medical students and junior doctors and is a recognised trainer for specialty trainees in Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery. He has a keen interest in research, having published over 30 peer reviewed articles and his current research interest is in traumatic and degenerative conditions of the shoulder.

Mr Ker is fortunate that Orthopaedics is not only his profession but his passion and the primary aim of any consultation is to ensure that the patient is fully informed regarding their condition and the treatment options. He hopes to ensure that each patient receives a bespoke treatment plan that meets their specific needs and expectations.
