Professor Smith graduated with commendation in medicine from the University of Glasgow in 1997. After completing his training in the West of Scotland and New Zealand, he was appointed Consultant in Respiratory Medicine and Clinical Lead at University Hospital Wishaw in 2009. As a highly experienced consultant, he provides comprehensive care across all areas of respiratory medicine and leads the Severe Asthma Service in Lanarkshire.

Professor Smith is deeply committed to education and training. He is a Fellow and Senior Examiner at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. His dedication to advancing respiratory medicine is evident from his role as a former member of the Evidence Review Group for the SIGN/British Thoracic Society National Asthma Guideline and as Chair of the West of Scotland Difficult Asthma Group. He also chairs the Lanarkshire Respiratory Service Improvement Group.

His academic achievements include a highly commended PhD in respiratory medicine, with key publications in esteemed journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine and the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. His research focuses on innovative asthma diagnostics and management, and he is Chief/Principal Investigator in clinical trials involving asthma, COPD, and chronic cough.

Known for his approachable, knowledgeable, and effective clinical style, Professor Smith is dedicated to providing excellent patient care. He values collaboration with his patients, ensuring they feel at ease and actively involved in their treatment plans.
