About Mr Andrew Baldwin

Personal Profile

Mr Baldwin qualified in Dentistry from Liverpool in 1983 and Medicine/Surgery from Manchester in 1994.

He obtained fellowships of The Royal College of Surgeons of both England and Edinburgh, and completed the higher surgical training pathway in the North West region, before he was appointed as Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon in 2003.

Mr Baldwin undertakes all aspects of oral and maxillofacial surgery, including removal of wisdom teeth, buried roots, jaw cysts, management of oral lesions, neck lumps, jaw and facial pain, facial trauma, and oral medicine. His specialist interests lie in head and neck cancer with reconstructive surgery, salivary gland disease, dental implant placement and bone grafting procedures.

In addition to his clinical activity, Mr Baldwin has been engaged in NHS clinical managerial roles locally and regionally.

For ten years (2004 – 2014) he led the head and neck oncology service within Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, and sat on the head and neck cancer pathway board for Greater Manchester and Cheshire.

He was Clinical Director for the Head and Neck service in his Trust (Maxillofacial Surgery, ENT Surgery and Plastic Surgery) from 2014 to 2017. From 2017, he has held the position of Divisional Clinical Director (for the surgical division) in North Manchester General Hospital, in addition to carrying out a busy clinical workload.

Mr Baldwin is heavily involved in medical leadership roles nationally. He is keen to influence and mould the future progress of his specialty, and was proud to sit as an elected member on the Council of British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (2012 – 2015).

At The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, he was elected to Dental Council in October 2020 for a 5-year appointment, and also currently chairs the Surgical Specialty Board for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Mr Baldwin has a strong interest in medical education, and undertakes post-graduate education with the North West & Mersey Deanery, and regularly teaches undergraduate medical and dental students at The University of Manchester, both in a clinical setting (wards, theatres) and formally with lectures and tutorials.

He examines for The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh nationally and internationally, and was a Regional Advisor for Royal College of Surgeons of England (2007 – 2015), helping to guide surgical trainees in the early stages of their career, and also helping to ensure national standards are met during trust medical staff appointment committees.

He is regularly asked to deliver formal teaching, and has lectured both at home and overseas in major conferences.
