Miss Amy Jayne Thomas is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon at Mersey West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, based at Whiston Hospital. She specialises in colorectal cancer surgery, robotic surgery, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and complex proctology, and is recognised for her patient-centred, holistic approach to bowel health.
Miss Thomas graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2004 and subsequently completed higher surgical training in General and Colorectal Surgery across the North West Deanery. She was awarded an MD in Surgery and Oncology by the University of Liverpool and achieved Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS).
Miss Thomas has undertaken two prestigious international colorectal fellowships in Australia. She completed a 12-month Advanced Robotic Colorectal Fellowship at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Epworth Freemasons Hospital in Melbourne, the highest-volume robotic colorectal fellowship in Australia. This competitive fellowship provided extensive experience in advanced robotic colorectal surgery, pelvic malignancy, and complex cancer surgery, and led to independent robotic console accreditation.
Prior to this, she completed a 12-month Colorectal Fellowship at Concord Repatriation Hospital in Sydney, a renowned tertiary colorectal unit managing complex colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and advanced benign colorectal conditions.
During this fellowship she further developed expertise in advanced endoscopy, endoanal ultrasound, fistula surgery, and complex colorectal procedures. In her current NHS consultant practice, Miss Thomas has developed a specialist interest in robotic colorectal cancer surgery, early rectal cancer, IBD surgery and advanced proctology. She performs a high proportion of her colorectal resections robotically (70% based on NCIP data 2025) and sits on the Colorectal and IBD Multidisciplinary Teams. Alongside her oncological practice, she is highly experienced in the management of haemorrhoids, anal fissures, fistula-in-ano and pilonidal disease.
She is particularly passionate about helping patients whose symptoms have a significant impact on quality of life and takes a holistic view of bowel health, recognising the importance of functional bowel disorders, lifestyle factors and long-term symptom management in addition to surgical treatment. Miss Thomas is actively involved in clinical leadership and service development. She is the Infection Control Lead for General Surgery and the Advice and Guidance Lead for her department, working closely with GP colleagues across the region to provide specialist advice and streamline patient care pathways. She has a strong commitment to teaching, mentorship and supporting the next generation of surgeons. She is an Educational Supervisor, mentors medical students and surgical trainees, and has a particular interest in supporting women in surgery.
She is also a participant on the Royal College of Surgeons of England Emerging Leaders Programme, a competitively selected national leadership fellowship for future surgical leaders. Miss Thomas has published widely in colorectal and robotic surgery and has presented her work nationally and internationally. She is known for combining technical excellence with compassionate, approachable care, ensuring that patients feel listened to, informed and supported throughout their treatment journey. Patients often value her approachable manner, clear communication, and commitment to treating each individual as a person rather than simply a diagnosis. She believes that excellent surgical care combines technical excellence, evidence-based decision making, and genuine compassion, and she strives to provide the same standard of care she would want for her own family.
