Personal Profile

Miss Amara Sohail is Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Basingstoke. After acquiring basic medical qualification in Pakistan in 1987 she came to UK for postgraduate education & training. She became a member of Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists in 2000 and then achieved fellowship in 2013.She completed her obstetrics & gynaecology training in Oxford & Wessex Deaneries. She was appointed as a consultant at Basingstoke in 2009.

Amara has achieved Diploma in Family Planning & Sexual Health and an MSc in Obstetrics & Gynaecology Ultrasound Scan, menopause, adolescent gynaecology, prolapse and polycystic ovarian syndrome. She is a general gynaecologist with an extensive knowledge and her special interest is in menstrual disorders, early pregnancy complications including recurrent miscarriages and gynaecological & obstetric ultrasound scanning.

Amara is currently lead consultant for Delivery Suite, Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit & Emergency Gynaecology and Clinical Audit. She is a visiting lecturer at Centre for Ultrasound Studies, Bournemouth, clinical tutor and student coordinator at University of Southampton. She is also Director of Medical Education at St George’s school of Medicine Grenada. She is affiliated with Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and has directed international workshops on Essential Obstetrics & Newborn care to improve maternal & neonatal morbidity & mortality in third world countries.

She has presented at many international meetings and working with Basingstoke-Hoima partnership charity, she has regularly visited Uganda to run courses & workshops for doctors, midwives & nurses. She has also run workshops in Kenya, Zimbabwe & Pakistan working in collaboration with RCOG & LSTM. She has an interest in media broadcasting and has participated in several television debating programmes and health shows. 

Amara has directed BBC series ‘Holby City’ and is also an Executive member of the Southwest London Doctor’s Association and attends meetings with MPs regarding healthcare improvements in NHS. She is an examiner for third and final year medical students at Southampton University and is also a member of BM curriculum committee.
