Mr Alvan Pope

Consultant Urologist

About Mr Alvan Pope

Personal Profile

Alvan Pope trained at the Middlesex Hospital Medical School in London, qualifying in 1980.  He entered specialty training in urology in 1987 at the St Peters Group of Urological Hospitals, now part of UCH.  He carried out research into bladder cancer at UCH, spent a year as a clinical fellow in Melbourne and was appointed as a consultant urologist at Hillingdon Hospital, with academic sessions at Charing Cross Hospital in 1995.  Alvan is married to a local GP and they have four teenage children.

He has a particular interest in cancer services, not just in urology, and has been the lead clinician for cancer services at Hillingdon Hospital since 2000. He chaired the West London Network Urology Tumour Board from 2001-5.  He has been active in clinical management including clinical director for surgery and associate medical director until 2009.  He has chaired the consultant staff committee and been a member of several regional groups and is a reviewer for the National Cancer Peer Review program.

Alvan’s research interests are mainly in prostate cancer.  He is the local lead at Hillingdon for several national clinical trials and was principal investigator at Charing Cross for a large multinational cancer drug study. He supports the prostate cryotherapy program at Mount Vernon Hospital, the only facility for this treatment for recurrent prostate cancer for NHS patients in West London. He has done work with the Cancer Services Collaborative and more recently with NHS Improvement working on a project to develop new principles for the care and support of men living with and beyond prostate cancer.  This work is part of a pilot scheme to deliver the National Cancer Survivorship Initiative.

Alvan is committed to improving patients’ experience of their cancer journey, in improving access, reducing inappropriate waiting for treatment and empowering cancer patients to improve their general health and fitness.  He is an enthusiast for the multidisciplinary team, and active in several patient support organisations, notably as president of a local support group; the Friends of Prostate Sufferers.
