Alex Ashmore personal profile

Mr Ashmore graduated from Bristol University in 1998. After his house officer year he undertook six months of Accident and Emergency service at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, followed by six months of teaching as an Anatomy Demonstrator at the university.

He then spent 18 months in Perth, Australia gaining experience in intensive care, neurosurgery and cardiothoracic surgery, prior to returning to the UK to complete his basic surgical training in Bath, where his passion for orthopaedics as a specialty was cemented. 

Mr Ashmore received world class higher surgical training on the Oxford Trauma and Orthopaedic rotation, where he was elected senior resident and became the senior coordinating trainee for the region. He was awarded a British Orthopaedic Association travelling fellowship and undertook further specialist fellowship training in Wellington, New Zealand, and at the world renown Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford.  He commenced his role as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Great Western Hospital Swindon in 2014 where he works as a hip replacement specialist. 

He has multiple peer reviewed publications in high impact journals, including the British Medical Journal and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, with over 218 citations of his work, and has been an invited lecturer nationally and internationally, winning Lecturer of the Year for his keynote adult hip lecture at the Oxford Comprehensive Orthopaedic Revision Course in 2015.

Mr Ashmore is Orthopaedic lead for hip fracture surgery, winning the Golden Hip Award in 2019, and remains committed to teaching and training.
