About Mr Alasdair MacInnes

Personal Profile

Mr Alasdair MacInnes specialises in hip and knee replacements, including partial knee replacements and complex revision joint replacements.

In addition to joint replacements, Mr MacInnes offers general trauma care for a range of injuries, including pelvic and acetabular trauma and rib fracture fixation, through his consultant role in the East of Scotland Major Trauma Centre.

Mr MacInnes graduated from medical school in 2010 and after completing foundation training, entered specialist training in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery.

Following completion of specialty training in the East of Scotland, and being awarded Fellowship of the Royal College (FRCS Orth), Mr MacInnes embarked upon a specialist pelvic and acetabular trauma fellowship at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Major Trauma Centre in Glasgow.

He then undertook an international fellowship in revision arthroplasty in New Zealand, before returning to Tayside to accept a consultant post in 2022. Mr MacInnes has held various leadership positions in the NHS such as Undergraduate Teaching Lead and is currently the Deputy Clinical Director for the Trauma and Orthopaedic Department.

He provides teaching for undergraduate student doctors and is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer with the University of Dundee. In recognition of his contribution to training, Mr MacInnes was awarded the Trainer of the Year prize for the East of Scotland deanery. He was highly commended for the time that he invests in developing the skills and knowledge of the trainees.

Mr MacInnes has previously been the team doctor for a Scottish Premiership football team and retains some ties to the club.

Mr MacInnes chairs the regional ‘arthroplasty meeting’- in which the most complicated surgical cases are discussed. He is often asked to assist consultant colleagues with difficult or complex cases or to provide expert opinion on patients with complex conditions.

He has previously lead the Bone and Joint Infection Multidisciplinary Meeting, which is a group convened to discuss complex patients with infected joint replacements. His expertise in exchanging poorly functioning joint replacements for new implants, has led to him being referred patients from colleagues in order to carry out further surgery to obtain quality outcomes.

Mr MacInnes submits data to the Scottish Arthroplasty Project and also to the Tayside Arthroplasty Audit Group, which means that he closely monitors surgical outcomes and maintains an excellent quality of patient care.
