About Ahmed Ghonaimy

Personal Profile

Mr Ahmed Ghonaimy is a Cosultant Urologist at Woodlands Hospital in Darlington. He has a special interest in functional, female and reconstructive urology.

He attained his medical degree in Egypt where he completed his urology training in a big university hospital. After that, he gained a clinical fellowship training on 'female and functional urology' in Egypt. Following this, he undertook another fellowship on 'laparoscopy, robotics and minimally invasive surgery in urology' in SLK-Kliniken Heilbronn, Germany. Mr Ghonaimy then had further urology training in Dartford and Medway hospitals, before he successfully completed a year of fellowship on 'functional, female, reconstructive and neuro-urology' at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. He has master’s degree in urology, and is a fellow of both the European Board of Urology (FEBU) and The Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS-Urol).

He is currently working as urology consultant in South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Darlington Memorial Hospital, with sub-special interest in functional and reconstructive urology. Moreover, he is a Consultant Urologist in the regional spinal injuries unit based at James Cook.

Mr Ghonaimy offers treatment for:

  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia including medical and surgical treatment in the form of TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate).
  • Lower urinary tract dysfunction conditions related to spinal cord injuries and other neurological diseases, including multiple sclerosis, stroke and parkinsonism
  • Bladder pain including ketamine-related, urinary incontinence, urinary retention, recurrent urinary tract infections (UTI), bladder and ureteric stones
  • Bladder tumours
  • Urethral and ureteric strictures
  • Hydrocele
  • Testicular tumours
  • Other scrotal and penile conditions

He is passionate about teaching and is a faculty in a number of teaching courses for trainees and young urologists.

There are delivered:

  • Locally at James Cook (basic urodynamics course, reconstructive urology course, functional masterclass, flexible cystoscopy course)
  • Nationally in the UK (IBUS UDS course, annual national ST3 urology bootcamp course in Leeds, bi-annual Sheffield spinal injuries course)
  • Internationally (management of bladder pain syndrome course, comprehensive UDS course in the Arab association of urology AAU)

He not only teaches in these courses, but is the director and moderator of some of them too. He is a Clinical and Educational Supervisor for undergraduate and post-graduate doctors.

Mr Ghonaimy is one of the co-founders of the British Egyptian Medical Association for Urology (BEMA-Urology) and is currently the lead of its scientific committee. He is also very interested in clinical research, with involvement in several research projects in different urological conditions. He has a very good research profile with national and international presentations and publications.
