About Mr Aditya Raja

Personal Profile

I am Mr Aditya Raja MBBS/BSc (Hons), AICSM, FRCS (Urol), a Consultant Urologist based in Harrogate with an NHS practice at Harrogate and District Foundation Trust Hospital. I have over 15 years of surgical experience and specialise in the diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management of a wide range of urological conditions.

As a private urologist in Harrogate, I see patients with problems affecting the kidneys, bladder, prostate, and male reproductive system, offering everything from early diagnosis and medical management to advanced minimally invasive surgery. I am committed to patient-centred care and shared decision-making, meaning my patients are always fully involved in planning their treatment. My goal is to combine medical expertise with compassion, ensuring that patients feel listened to, respected, and reassured.

Training and Professional Background

I trained at Imperial College School of Medicine, London, graduating in 2007 with a medical degree and an intercalated BSc in Medical Sciences with Pharmacology and Toxicology. After completing my early surgical training in Essex and the East Midlands, I pursued specialist urology training in the Yorkshire and the Humber deanery and have made Yorkshire my home.

During this time, I gained extensive experience in both routine and complex urological conditions, including urinary stone disease, prostate disorders, bladder cancer, and reconstructive procedures. In 2024, I was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS Urol), a culmination of years of urological training.

I was appointed as a Consultant Urologist at Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust, where I continue to deliver both emergency and elective urology services for the local community. Alongside this, I see private patients across Harrogate and the wider Yorkshire region who are seeking timely access to specialist care.

Areas of Expertise

I offer a comprehensive private urology service in Harrogate and North Yorkshire. My main areas of expertise include:

  • Kidney and urinary stone disease – diagnosis, laser surgery, minimally invasive treatments, and prevention strategies to reduce recurrence.
  • Prostate conditions – assessment of raised PSA, prostate cancer diagnostics, benign prostate enlargement (BPH), and modern surgical and minimally invasive treatments for urinary symptoms.
  • Bladder conditions – recurrent urinary tract infections, blood in the urine (haematuria), bladder cancer diagnosis and follow-up, incontinence, and painful bladder symptoms.
  • General urology – including foreskin problems, testicular lumps and hydroceles.

I have a particular interest in minimally invasive endourological surgery, such as ureteroscopy, laser lithotripsy, and Urolift. These advanced techniques allow patients to benefit from shorter hospital stays, faster recovery, and less postoperative discomfort.

Patient-Centred Approach

I understand that seeking help for a urological problem can be worrying. Whether it’s blood in the urine, troublesome urinary symptoms, or concern about prostate health, many patients feel anxious before seeing a urologist. That’s why I take the time to listen carefully, explain investigations and treatments in clear, jargon-free language, and work with my patients to decide on the most appropriate care pathway.

Patients regularly tell me that what they value most is not only my medical expertise but also my approachable manner and ability to explain complex issues in a way that makes sense. I strongly believe in shared decision-making, where patients are partners in their treatment choices. This means my patients feel informed and confident, whether they are having reassurance after tests, medical therapy, or advanced surgical intervention.

Teaching and Training

I am passionate about teaching and training the next generation of surgeons. I serve as faculty on national and regional surgical training courses, including the Royal College of Surgeons’ Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient (CCrISP) programme and the national Urology Bootcamp.

I regularly teach on practical skills courses covering cystoscopy, ureteroscopy, stent insertion, and endourology. I have also supervised MSc research projects and acted as a mentor for junior doctors preparing for surgical training.

Teaching, for me, is about more than passing on technical skills – it is about inspiring confidence, clarity, and professionalism in those I train, just as I aim to do with my patients.
