About Professor Adam Greenstein

Personal Profile

*Please note that Professor Adam Greenstein is only accepting self pay patients at this time

Professor Adam Greenstein is one of the UK's most prominent geriatricians (also known as 'Care of the Elderly' Medicine) and is very happy to see new patient referrals at the Alexandra Hospital in Cheadle, Manchester.

Adam is also Professor of Medicine at the University of Manchester where his interests focus on the effects of blood pressure on the brain. Over time, exposure to elevated blood pressure (also called 'hypertension') leads to dementia and Adam provides a comprehensive diagnostic service for people worried about their memory, from all causes. Vascular damage to the brain can also lead to problems with balance, energy levels, motivation, mood and urinary control. As a geriatrician, Adam is expert in the assessment and treatment of these common conditions as well as being able to manage the complicated and concurrent illnesses which often co-exist in older people. Adam is also an expert in the diagnosis, investigation and treatment of hypertension in adults and this forms a large part of his practice at the Alexandra.

Adam's research in vascular brain health is internationally acclaimed and he has given keynote lectures across the world as well as fronting prominent charity programmes. His research has opened up new opportunities for early preventative treatment to slow the progression of brain disease and dementia and in 2024 was awarded the British Heart Foundation 'Research Story of the Year' award for his work on Small Vessel Disease of the Brain. Adam's work in this area mean that patients can be signposted to the latest research opportunities.

Originally from London, Adam came to Manchester to study medicine in 1991 and apart from a training fellowship in Vermont, USA, has never left the North of England. He trained in geriatrics in Yorkshire before returning to Manchester to study for his PhD which was awarded in 2009. He now runs one of the largest research groups in vascular brain health in the UK and lives very happily with his family in Cheshire.

Clinical Interests

The art of geriatrics involves being able to see the patient as a whole, rather than a single disease affecting a single organ requiring a specific treatment. Almost always, diseases in the elderly co-exist in the same patient, for example: heart disease, hypertension, parkinsons disease, diabetes and memory loss.

In order to treat people effectively, the geriatrician has to identify the priorities for the patient and their families, avoid having too many medications which can themselves cause problems but retain those therapies which will most benefit the patient. The medical issues have to be taken into context with the capacity for the patient to cope with them and treatment tailored accordingly. Given the complexity of these issues, consultation times are significantly longer than for other specialities, allowing for a more complete understanding of the issues facing the patient.

Common geriatric presentations seen include:

  • Memory
  • Polypharmacy (in other words - being on too many medications)
  • Management of blood pressure
  • Heart and lung disorders leading to breathlessness
  • Balance and stability problems
  • Movement disorders
  • Stroke disease
  • Chronic pain
  • Mood disorders
  • Fatigue and slowing
  • Non-specific symptoms ( e.g. 'just not right')
  • General health check-ups
