Mr Sharma qualified from Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals and undertook basic surgical training in Essex. He spent a year doing research at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and subsequently gained a place on the prestigious Imperial North-West Thames training programme based at St Mary’s and Charing Cross Hospitals.
During his training, he spent two years at the major trauma centre at St Mary’s Hospital which included time with the spinal trauma unit. He gained invaluable experience of both orthopaedic and neurosurgical techniques in spinal surgery whilst there. He also worked in the high-volume spinal unit at the Royal Free Hospital, London.
His senior registrar year was spent at the internationally-renowned spinal unit at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital where he further broadened his skill base in managing adult and paediatric spinal deformity as well as complex and revision degenerative spinal cases.
During his training, he also received a comprehensive level of training in general orthopaedic trauma with an emphasis on major trauma.
His advanced fellowship was in the highly reputed spinal unit at Frimley Park Hospital. Here, he refined his techniques in all aspects of adult spinal surgery with an emphasis on minimally invasive and microscopic techniques but also in the whole range of spinal instrumented cases. He also refined his skills in emergency spinal surgery for cauda equina compression, spinal tumours, infection and fractures. He worked at Frimley and then St Peter’s as a locum consultant for a short stint before his substantive appointment.
He is widely published across the breadth of trauma and orthopaedic surgery and has presented his work internationally. He is also a recognised trainer for the KSS and London deaneries and is regularly invited to lecture to higher surgical trainees and postgraduate students.
During training, Mr Sharma completed a master’s degree from Imperial College London in Surgical Innovation. This introduced the principles of quality improvement which underline Mr Sharma’s practice to this day. This combined with his extensive background in research ensures that his patients will receive up to date methods and techniques of treatment which are at the same time underpinned with a solid evidence base.
Aside of his busy spinal practice, Mr Sharma is also a prolific trauma surgeon and participates on the trauma rota at the famed Rowley Bristow Unit at St Peter’s Hospital, Chertsey.
With a high level of expertise stemming from his unique experience, his opinion is regularly sought by his orthopaedic consultant colleagues as well as those from other disciplines on patients with spinal problems, both routine and complex.
Mr Sharma prides himself on his attention to detail when managing each of his patients. He takes great care in explaining any underlying problems in easy-to-understand terms, with an emphasis on patient-centred decision making for treatment. The merits and potential pitfalls of each treatment option are laid out in a way that enables patients to make informed decisions about their care.
