Dealing with Guillain-Barré syndrome

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rare illness where the body’s nervous system (outside of the brain and spinal cord) gets inflamed.

This can cause muscle weakness, paralysis, and potentially life-threatening complications.

GBS can occur at any age, although it is more common in adults and older individuals. The exact cause of GBS is not fully understood.

If your family member has been diagnosed with GBS it may be affecting their:

  • cognitive
  • physical
  • emotional
  • behavioural functioning

Recovery from GBS can be gradual and may take weeks to months. Some people might still feel weak or have lasting nerve problems even after they get better.

At our rehabilitation centre, we work to help your loved one recover as much as possible, become more independent, and improve their quality of life and well-being.

The road to recovery - Lynn’s journey

Lynn suffered from Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), which was not caught early enough before it had started destroying her main organs.

She was referred to Circle Rehabilitation after her daughter started researching hospitals that specialise in neurological patients suffering from Guillain-Barré symptoms.

When Lynn arrived at Circle Rehabilitation for treatment, she had lost all sensation in her feet and legs up to her knees but was determined to work hard to recover her independence.

Lynn, former GBS patient

  • Treatment and support for Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS)

For individuals affected by GBS, a period of residential rehabilitation is often recommended in a community rehabilitation facility. At Circle Rehabilitation our experienced multidisciplinary team are able to construct personalised rehabilitation programs for patients catering for their individual needs and goals. In order to do this, the patient first needs to be declared medically fit and stable enough for therapy, by a doctor or medical consultant.

Through the use of modern technologies such as robotics, sensor technology, virtual reality and gamification, patients at Circle Rehabilitation are guided through the rehabilitation process more intensively and motivationally with the aim of facilitating patient’s recovery to their maximum potential.

At our rehabilitation centre, we provide comprehensive care tailored to the unique needs of individuals recovering from Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). Our specialist neurological rehabilitation team provides expert support and care to ease your symptoms, increase mobility, prevent falls and improve your quality of life.

  • Each patient receives a personalised rehabilitation programme designed to address their specific needs and goals. The programmes are developed by our experienced multidisciplinary team, including rehabilitation consultants, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, and psychologists.

  • For those requiring intensive rehabilitation, our residential facility offers a supportive environment where patients can focus on their recovery. Our state-of-the-art technologies, such as robotics, sensor technology, virtual reality, and gamification, are utilised to create engaging and effective rehabilitation sessions. These tools help to motivate patients and facilitate their recovery to their maximum potential.

  • For individuals who may not need residential care, we provide outpatient support services. These services are designed to offer continuous support and treatment, ensuring that patients maintain progress and adapt to any changes in their condition. Regular assessments and adjustments to the rehabilitation plan are made to ensure optimal recovery.

We provide specialist rehabilitation treatment for those who require an intensive programme and a stay in our facility in addition to those that need occasional support as part of their ongoing recovery plan.

Key areas of focus

  • Our physical rehabilitation strategies include exercises and therapies to improve strength, coordination, balance, and overall physical function. We use advanced equipment and techniques to support each patient's physical recovery journey.

  • Some GBS patients may experience difficulties with speech and swallowing. Our speech and language therapists provide targeted interventions to improve communication skills and ensure safe swallowing practices.

  • Recovery from GBS is a gradual process that requires ongoing monitoring and support. Meet the staff

One key benefit of sending a family member or loved one to be treated at Circle Rehabilitation is its multi-disciplined and friendly staff. The staff that the patient encounters truly care about their overall experience and can help with wider issues, such as providing therapy, and nutritional help.

Every person who suffers from GBS will be different. Here at Circle Rehabilitation, our multidisciplinary team can tailor your physical therapy programme to your individual needs and aims.

We also recognise the psychological toll of recovering from a GBS and the emotional turmoil of leaving your home to stay at a rehabilitation centre. Our staff go out of their way to make patients stay comfortable, and nurturing. They will ask what food they like, offer entertainment and a chance for variety in their day, and generally make sure that each patient is happy and cared for during their stay.

We will ensure that you are kept up to date with their recovery and wellbeing so that you can feel comfortable leaving your loved one in our hands.

Circle Rehabilitation - Fahad's story

Fahad came to Circle Rehabilitation from Kuwait after suffering from Guillan Barre Syndrome.

When he came to Circle Rehab he couldn’t move his muscles and had been bound to one room for 6 months. Our physiotherapy team created a treatment plan for Fahad, to help him achieve his goals. By using our physio equipment and following his treatment plan, he has regained his balance, standing ability and has strengthened his muscles.

He has been able to stop using a catheter, that was restraining his ability to move, and also regain a level of independence, such as getting himself out of bed in the morning and has retained his confidence.
