Dealing with Cerebral palsy (CP)

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of permanent movement disorders that appear in early childhood. Cerebral palsy is typically caused by brain damage that occurs before, during, or shortly after birth. It's caused by abnormal development or damage to the parts of the brain that control movement, balance, and posture. Factors that can lead to brain damage include:
  • Infections during pregnancy
  • Lack of oxygen to the brain during birth (asphyxia)
  • Premature birth
  • Traumatic head injury
If your family member or loved one suffers from Cerebral palsy, they may have difficulties with:
  • Muscle stiffness or rigidity
  • Involuntary movements
  • Difficulty with coordination and balance
  • Delayed milestones (such as sitting, crawling, or walking)
  • Problems with speech and language development
  • Intellectual disabilities
  • Seizures
While there is no cure for cerebral palsy, various treatments and therapies can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. At our rehabilitation centre, or highly skilled team of experts will work with your loved one to improve physical ability, build confidence and optimise their potential.

Types of Cerebral palsy

The types of Cerebral palsy are categorised based on the type of movement disorder and the parts of the body affected. The main types include:

  • Spastic cerebral palsy: this is the most common type, characterised by stiff and difficult movement
  • Dyskinetic cerebral palsy: this type involves involuntary and uncontrollable movements
  • Ataxic cerebral palsy: this type affects balance and coordination
  • Mixed cerebral palsy: some people may have symptoms of more than one type
  • Treatment and support for Cerebral palsy (CP) patients

At Circle Rehabilitation we approach each individual case with understanding and support, as cerebral palsy affects each person differently. Providing accurate information about CP can help raise awareness and promote understanding and inclusion for individuals living with this condition.

Cerebral palsy is typically diagnosed during infancy or early childhood.

While there is no cure for cerebral palsy, various treatments and therapies can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. These may include:

    • Physiotherapy to improve muscle strength, flexibility, and mobility
    • Occupational therapy to develop skills for daily living activities
    • Speech and Language therapy to improve communication skills
    • Medications to manage symptoms such as muscle stiffness and seizures
    • Assistive devices and adaptive equipment to aid mobility and independence
    • Surgery to correct skeletal abnormalities or alleviate spasticity

How can we treat CP patients?

Rehabilitation treatments for cerebral palsy (CP) aim to improve quality of life, independence, and functional abilities through a multidisciplinary approach. These treatments include various medical, therapeutic, and technological interventions.

  • Physical therapy focuses on improving strength, flexibility, balance, and mobility through exercises, stretching, gait training, and the use of assistive devices like walkers or orthotic devices.

  • Occupational therapy enhances fine motor skills and daily living activities. Therapists use exercises to improve hand-eye coordination and train patients in tasks such as dressing and eating, often incorporating adaptive equipment.

  • Speech and language therapy aims to improve communication skills and manage feeding and swallowing difficulties through speech exercises, communication devices, and techniques to strengthen oral muscles.

  • Medications help manage symptoms such as spasticity, seizures, and pain. Common medications include muscle relaxants like baclofen, anticonvulsants, and pain relief medications.

  • Assistive technology enhances communication and mobility. Devices such as augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) tools, powered wheelchairs, and computer access aids are commonly used.

  • Sensory integration therapy helps with sensory processing issues through activities designed to help the child respond appropriately to sensory stimuli.

  • Constraint-induced movement therapy encourages the use of a weaker limb by restricting the use of the stronger limb, thereby improving the function of the affected limb.

  • Biofeedback uses sensors to provide feedback on muscle activity, helping patients learn to control specific muscle groups and improve muscle control and relaxation.

  • Nutritional counselling ensures proper nutrition and manages feeding difficulties through dietary planning and assistance with feeding techniques.

Meet the staff

One key benefit to sending a family member or loved one to be treated at Circle Rehabilitation is its multi-disciplined and friendly staff. The staff that the patient encounters truly care about their overall experience and can help with wider issues, such as providing therapy, and nutritional help.

Every person who has been diagnosed with Cerebral palsy will be different. Here at Circle Rehabilitation, our multidisciplinary team can tailor your physical therapy programme to your individual needs and aims.

We also recognise the psychological toll of dealing with Cerebral palsy and the emotional turmoil of leaving your home to stay at a rehabilitation centre. Our staff go out of their way to make patients stay comfortable, and nurturing. They will ask what food they like, offer entertainment and a chance for variety in their day, and generally make sure that each patient is happy and cared for during their stay.

We will ensure that you are kept up to date with their recovery and wellbeing so that you can feel comfortable leaving your loved one in our hands.
