This is a new form of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) developed for treating severe relapsing depression which epidemiological studies across 6 European countries found occurs in 6.9% of the population (Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy for depression by Segal ZV, Williams JMG, Teasdale, JD, 2012, Guildford Press.)
It combines the philosophy of mindfulness with CBT. It has been very well researched by 5 randomized controlled trails and is now the recommended treatment of choice for this condition by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines for the Treatment and Management of Depression p37-38 Sections 188.8.131.52 to 10.
This treatment consists of group therapy 2.5 hours a week over 8 weeks – a total of 20 hours. It works by helping change the patient’s ruminative negative thought patterns typical of depression so that patients learn to identify and cope with them better. It teaches them to be calmer and more positive about making the most of their lives.
