Micro epididymal sperm aspiration procedure sperm are recovered by making a small cut in the scrotum.
In this procedure sperm are recovered by making a small cut in the scrotum.
MESA is usually carried out under general anaesthetic by the consultant urologist. A small cut is made in the scrotum to expose the epididymis (where sperm are stored from each testicle), and then remove the sperm.
It is normal to feel some discomfort in the groin for a few days after this procedure, but this will settle with mild painkillers.
For more information, and if you have any queries, speak to your consultant.
MESA is appropriate for men who have no sperm in the ejaculate because they are born with no vas deferens (the sperm-carrying tube), or because it is blocked. MESA is also suitable for men who have had a vasectomy.
