What are the benefits of finger or thumb replantation surgery?

The main benefit of surgery is to restore the use of the amputated digit.

What does the finger or thumb replantation operation involve?

The replantation of digits is usually performed under general anaesthetic and the length of time taken in surgery will depend on the complexity of the replantation. Your surgeon will attempt to restore blood flow and use to the amputated digit by reconnecting the severed arteries, veins, tendons, bones and nerves.

What complications can happen?

General complications of any operation:
  • Pain
  • Bleeding
  • Infection in the surgical wound
  • Scarring
Specific complications of this operation:
  • Failing replant
  • Flexor tendon adhesions
  • Cold intolerance

How soon will I recover?

You should consult with your plastic surgeon, as the severity of the replantation will have an effect on the recovery time and when you may be released from hospital. Summary Digit amputation will result in loss of the function of the digits concerned. Digit replantation should restore partial or full use of the amputated digit.

Paying for your operation

The cost of digit replantation is covered by most medical insurance policies, but please check with your insurer first. If you are paying for your own treatment the cost of the operation will be explained and confirmed in writing when you book the operation. Ask the hospital for a quote beforehand, and ensure that this includes the surgeon’s fee, the anaesthetist’s fee and the hospital charge for your procedure. The information should not replace advice that your relevant health professional would give you.
