What causes hyperhidrosis?
This condition can be caused by various emotional factors but in frequent instances may be idiopathic (meaning the exact cause is not understood). Additional causes include:
- Hereditary – it is common for hyperhidrosis to run in families
- Menopause – symptoms of menopause can include excessive sweating
- Over-active thyroid gland
- Antidepressants – some antidepressants can cause a side effect of excessive sweating.
What treatments are available?
Sprays or special lotions may help, but in cases where these fail it is possible to ‘relax’ the sweat glands by injecting purified treatment (as used in facial wrinkle injections) in the areas of highest sweat production under the feet. This is performed under a local anaesthetic.
Are there any risks associated with hyperhidrosis treatment?
This treatment has an excellent safety record as evidenced by the millions of facial cosmetic procedures performed around the world every year. A detailed medical history is taken before treatment and any potential side-effects are fully explained.
