What is endometrial ablation?
Endometrial Ablation involves destruction of the lining of the womb to prevent heavy periods. One form of this is the NovaSure device, which uses radio frequency energy in a very precisely controlled manner.
The procedure involves inserting a thin rod, a little smaller than the diameter of a pen, through the cervix and into the uterine cavity. A micro-mesh is then extruded from the tip to fill the uterine cavity. After activation of the safety features, the ablation takes place.
The advantage of this over other techniques is that it takes a short time (approximately 90 seconds) and this therefore makes it particularly suitable for those women who don’t want to have a general anaesthetic. Some studies have shown it to have higher rates of amenorrhoea (no periods) and longer lasting effects than other techniques.
The safety features of the treatment give it a very low complication rate.
