Checking for breast lumps

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. According to Cancer Research UK, an estimated 55,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer n the UK every year.
Although it is rare, men can also develop breast cancer. In the UK alone, around 350 men are diagnosed with breast cancer every year.

It’s important to keep track of any changes in your breasts to detect early signs of breast cancer. If you notice any changes in your breasts, it is recommended that you contact your GP as soon as possible.
The most common changes in your breasts to look out for include:
- Breast or armpit pain that is constant;
- A change in your breast size or shape;
- A change in the skin texture of your breasts;
- A lump or thickening in your breast that feels different from your surrounding breast tissue;
- A redness or rash on or around your nipple;
- An inverted (pulled in) nipple or a nipple that has changed shape or position;
- A swelling around your collarbone or in your armpit; and
- Discharge from one or both of your nipples.
As you age, it is natural for the appearance and shape of your breasts to change. The same goes for different stages of your menstrual cycle.
