If you suspect a patient of yours has cancer or indeed has a confirmed cancer diagnosis, the Sheffield Oncology would be happy to see the patient, organise MDT discussion and appropriate cancer treatment.
Our dedicated nursing team will provide a holistic personalised support service to help patients achieve the best possible life outcomes and can be involved from the outset.
Facilities for patients
Patients nursed within our cancer care unit each have their own room with en-suite facilities, television and a telephone to provide privacy and comfort.
Patients are encouraged to have family or friends accompany them during their time in the unit as we understand that this can often be of benefit in helping patients to relax.
The unit is staffed by the cancer care nursing team Monday to Friday and a consultant can be contacted for advice out of normal office hours.
We aim to offer flexibility in the provision of care, which can often be helpful for parents of younger children or those who continue to work throughout the delivery of their treatment.
It is our aim to provide individual care specific to the identified needs of our patients. We encourage patients to get to know each member of the team as this can be reassuring if they have to call for support and advice.
Our specialist team is aware of the trauma a diagnosis of cancer can bring and our aim is to support the patient and their family through this time. We provide seamless care to help to reduce as much of the stress and anxiety as possible.
In the unit, the delivery of systemic anti-cancer treatment and support therapies is provided by a team of skilled and experienced staff.
Macmillan Quality Environment Award
In 2016, Thornbury Cancer Care Suite was recognised by Macmillan Cancer Support for its high standards of patient care by being awarded the Macmillan Quality Environment Mark (MQEM).
The MQEM is awarded to cancer care environments that meet a set of standards developed with over 400 patients and other stakeholders, including the Department of Health.
Thornbury Cancer Care Suite was assessed on all aspects of its environment and its services to patients, including the treatment and consultation rooms, accessibility, the welcome they are afforded, how staff communicate with them and the respect given for their privacy and dignity.
Assessors also measured the quality of the menus and meals, the suite’s cleanliness and patients’ ability to control things such as lighting and temperature. Patient feedback formed an important part of the process.
We are pleased to announce that Thornbury Cancer Care Unit has once again been recognised for meeting standards required for the Macmillan Quality Environment Mark (MQEM).
The MQEM is a detailed quality framework used for assessing whether cancer care environments meet the standards required by people living with cancer.
Thank you so much to Linda Matthews (Lead Oncology Nurse Specialist) and the rest of the Cancer Care team for all your hard work to achieve this recognition once again.
