The Rehabilitation Medicine service at Thornbury Hospital in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, is the first dedicated private rehabilitation service of this kind in South Yorkshire. Launched in 2017 by Mr Rajiv Singh, Consultant Physician in Rehabilitation Medicine. The service provides treatment for individuals unfortunately affected by trauma or illness.

What is Rehabilitation Medicine

Rehabilitation Medicine aims to restore function to individuals who have been disabled by trauma or illness.  This has usually focussed on neurological disability including conditions such as traumatic brain injury, stroke, multiple sclerosis and cerebral palsy; however, it also embraces those with musculoskeletal disability and amputees.

Specialists in RM identify the extent of any impairment or disability caused by an illness.  Treatment plans for subsequent rehabilitation are organised through a multidisciplinary approach with a team of specialists including Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy.

Different disciplines work together towards a common goal.  The aim of any course of rehabilitation is to facilitate the maximum possible recovery for an individual and return to a normal lifestyle.  This is based on the individual’s needs, abilities and their own wishes.

The identification of the extent of any physical, cognitive, emotional and social problems allow specialists to then identify both short and long term goals to guide the rehabilitation process.  Such goals take into account the aims and views of each individual, their needs and their pre-injury function and lifestyle.

Those with Brain Injury present a particular challenge as this condition often results in emotional/behavioural problems, cognitive changes e.g. thinking speed, attention and memory, speech difficulties as well as physical problems such as decreased movement, balance and pain.

For many individuals a return to work and other aspects of everyday life, e.g. study and driving, are of particular concern. The Rehabilitation Service provides guidance with appropriate treatments aimed at improving or increasing physical tolerance of an individual to allow gradual, phased return to work or education.

There is an emphasis on interactions in the work-place as well as biomechanics of any activities at work.
