Breast surgery

Breast surgery is performed by specialist breast surgeons for both benign and malignant (cancerous) disease.

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the UK, and can affect women of all ages. Although much more common in women, men can also develop breast cancer. While a diagnosis of any type of cancer can be a horrible shock to receive, breast cancer can often be successfully treated if caught at an early stage.

Treatment for breast cancer will often result in a change in the shape and/or size of the breasts and surgery may be carried out to treat the cancer (Oncoplastic breast surgery) or to improve the appearance of the breast after surgery (Reconstructive breast surgery). Surgery can also be carried out to enhance the breasts (Cosmetic breast surgery).

Whether you require surgery as a result of a breast cancer diagnosis or breast cancer treatment, or you are unhappy with the size or shape of your natural breasts, we are here to help you. Our highly experienced Consultant Breast and Oncoplastic Surgeons will provide you with expert advice, treatment and care and would be delighted to discuss the options available to you for your particular needs.

At The Highfield Hospital in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, dedicated breast surgeons provide investigation and treatment of a number of breast symptoms and conditions. Breast surgery may be carried out in order to:

  • Conserve the breast
  • Remove the breast tissue affected by cancer
  • Reconstruct the breast after treatment
  • Enhance the breast

Surgery to CONSERVE the breast includes:

  • Lumpectomy – removal of abnormal tissue from the breast
  • Excision – removal of cancerous cells along with an area of surrounding healthy tissue
  • Oncoplastic surgery – where a large amount of cancerous tissue has been removed from the breast, oncoplastic surgery reshapes and remodels the remaining breast tissue

REMOVAL surgery for the breast includes:

  • Mastectomy – removal of all breast tissue. This will often be followed by breast reconstruction surgery (see section below)
  • Lymph node removal – cancer cells found in the lymph nodes in your armpit can be removed to reduce risk of additional health problems in the future

Surgery to RECONSTRUCT the breast includes:

  • Reconstruction with implant – a silicone implant is placed under the skin
  • Nipple reconstruction
  • Fat transfer – Fat taken from another part of the body (the trunk or thighs) is used to increase the volume of the breast.

Surgery to ENHANCE the breast (cosmetic breast surgery) includes:

  • Breast enlargement (augmentation) – silicone implants placed behind the breast tissue increase the volume of the breast.
  • Breast reduction (women) – removal of breast tissue to make the breasts more proportionate to the frame
  • Breast reduction (men) – a combination of liposuction and removal of excess breast tissue
  • Breast uplift – reshapes saggy or droopy breasts
  • Breast asymmetry surgery – a breast augmentation for the smaller breast or reduction of the larger one can improve symmetry
  • Fat grafting – fat taken from another part of the body is injected around the breast to alter its shape
  • Revision breast surgery – to correct or improve the appearance of the breasts following previous breast surgery

Women who are identified as being at higher risk of developing breast cancer may also consider Risk Reducing Breast Surgery. We can make sure you have all the information needed to make an informed choice about treatment.

If anything is found that will require treatment, your consultant will explain suitable treatment options to and make sure you have all the details you need to make an informed choice about treatment.

At The Highfield Hospital, you will always see the same consultant, and they will be the one who carries out your surgery. This ensures excellent continuity of care at every stage of your treatment.

Unlike many other medical specialities, most people will not need any imaging or diagnostic scans.
