Lipogems is a new minimally invasive treatment that uses natural repair cells using your own body fat to target problems affecting the tendons, ligaments, joints and muscles, including osteoarthritis.
Lipogems is a new minimally invasive treatment that uses natural repair cells using your own body fat to target problems affecting the tendons, ligaments, joints and muscles, including osteoarthritis.
The Lipogems therapy uses a device to create an injectable tissue made from your own fat reserves. The tissue is injected into affected joints to aid healing and provide cushioning and support.
The Beaumont Hospital in Bolton is currently the only hospital in our network offering this treatment.
Patients with moderate osteoarthritis and those with sports injuries or other problems affecting tendons, ligaments and muscles may benefit from the Lipogems treatment. Where physiotherapy or steroid injections have not provided significant relief, Lipogems can be a suitable minimally invasive alternative to major surgical intervention.
Lipogems injectable tissue therapy isn’t suitable for everyone however. At your initial consultation the orthopaedic surgeon will review your condition in detail and may request further diagnostic tests, such as an X-ray, MRI or CT scan. Following this your consultant will be able to advise if Lipogems is the right choice for you.
The Lipogems procedure can be performed in less than one hour in an outpatient clinical setting. It requires only local anaesthetic and there is minimal recovery time.
Your consultant will collect a small volume of fat from your abdomen using a minimally invasive technique that requires a small incision. The Lipogems are then created in a device that uses sterile saline solution to wash away the impurities.
The process micro-fragments the fat, preserving the regenerative properties of the tissue. The small size of the Lipogems tissue allows your consultant to inject a targeted treatment site with a small gauge needle, minimising pain at the injection site. Most patients won’t need any stitches to close the incision sites.
You will be discharged the same day and can be back to your usual level of activity within 5 days. The full effects of the Lipogems injectable tissue therapy are usually felt within 5 weeks.
