The specialty uses non-surgical strategies to help control many forms of pain. Whether the pain has emerged following surgery or trauma or is being caused by a persistent pain disorder, a pain management specialist can help. Pain management recognises pain can have a multitude of different causes and can also be a condition in its own right.  A pain management specialist can determine the approaches most likely to assist an individual situation, from specialised injection therapies or medications through to assisted self management techniques.

Pain management consultants work with a range of specialists across the hospital, and often patients are referred to a pain management consultant from orthopaedics, neurosurgery and spinal surgery.

Pain management treatments are not restricted to specific conditions but are an option for anyone suffering from unmanaged pain.

One of the most common causes of unmanaged pain is chronic musculoskeletal disorders such as back or neck pain, perhaps associated with radiating pain from an irritated or compressed neural tissue.

Private pain management treatments offered at Ross Hall Clinic Braehead include:

  • Chronic headaches
  • Chronic low back pain
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Head and neck pain
  • Herniated discs
  • Joint pain (facet & sacroiliac)
  • Neuropathic pain
  • Persistent post-surgical pain
  • Post spinal surgery pain
  • Reflex sympathetic dystrophy
  • Spinal pain/sciatica

Often, imaging will already have been undertaken from previous appointments, but your pain management consultant will be able to request any additional scans that might be required to assist a diagnosis and develop a treatment plan.

Treatments offered at Ross Hall Clinic Braehead include:

  • Anti-inflammatory injections such as corticosteroid injections
  • Nerve root block injections
  • Pain killing medication (analgesics)
  • Medication to reduce muscle tone in certain conditions
  • Radiofrequency ablation for spinal pain

Pain management also includes some of the mental aspects that might be making pain feel worse, so Ross Hall Clinic Braehead provides support and guidance for anxiety and stress management.

Diagnosis, consultations and treatment will be tailored to you and be delivered under the leadership of your consultant, supported by the experienced multidisciplinary team at Ross Hall Clinic Braehead.

Patients can make an appointment directly with one of the consultants at Ross Hall Clinic Braehead or by asking a GP to refer you (this may be necessary if you have private medical insurance). Our enquiries team will give you all the information you need to choose the right specialist for your needs and offer an appointment at a time to suit you.

Your initial consultation with a specialist pain management physician will consist of a full assessment of your condition. This might include a physical examination if required.

MRI uses a magnetic field to create a detailed image of the inside of your body, invaluable in the diagnosis, management and treatment of pain. Usually, MRI scans are available within 5-10 days from your initial consultation and are primarily used to look for nerve entrapment. If you are experiencing any spinal pain, you will certainly have an MRI scan.

Patients also have fast access to other diagnostics that may be required:

  • CT scan - Often referred to as CAT Scans, X-rays are used to produce detailed images of your internal structures.

  • Ultrasound - Sound waves are used to create an image of a specific part of the body, used to help pinpoint the source of pain.

  • Radiofrequency - Testing each nerve to work out which one is causing the pain and then stimulating the nerve to reproduce the symptom. Subsequently, radiofrequency ablation is used to destroy nerves that are causing pain.

  • Pulse radiofrequency - Used to reset or re-programme nerves, this medical process is called neuromodulation.

  • Diagnostic injections - Used to identify where the pain is coming from. Pain is often settled straight away but can sometimes take a day or two to settle down. The vast majority of patients are able to go home the same day. Patients will attend a 4-6 week post-procedure follow up and are welcome to contact the consultant with any queries.

Your consultant will then examine the scans to see if there are visible issues that might be the cause of your pain. Once the consultant has seen the scan, they will be better informed, and a second physical examination will be effective to determine the appropriate next steps.

If further testing, injection therapy, surgery or referral to another specialist within the hospital is required, we’ll provide clarity and answer any questions you might have.

They will also conduct a review of your current medication and work with other specialists to create a tailored treatment plan which includes medication, treatment and rehabilitation. You will benefit from fast access and referral to other specialist consultants and physiotherapists to continue your treatment and care. Your pain management consultant is available for reassessment consultations and to provide advice and guidance.
