Dr Sunil Patel is a Consultant Physician who is triple accredited in respiratory, general and intensive care medicine. 

Dr Patel completed bachelors degrees in Chemistry (BSc) and Biomedical Science (BMedSci) followed by his medical degree (MBBS) at the University of Nottingham. He is a member of the Royal College of Physicians UK (MRCP) and a Fellow of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (FFICM). Dr Patel completed his higher training in multiple London teaching hospitals and academic centres.

He has extensive experience in all aspects of respiratory disease but sub-specialises in interstitial lung disease (which includes pulmonary fibrosis) and respiratory failure which includes the investigation and diagnostic workup of patients with symptoms of cough, shortness of breath and difficulty in breathing. 

Dr Patel runs specialist interstitial lung disease clinics at Hammersmith Hospital and attends regular multi-disciplinary team meetings which discuss and manage complex respiratory disease. Dr Patel also sees and manages patients with acute lung infection, airways disease (such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)). He is experienced with diagnostic bronchoscopy, chest ultrasound and associated interventions.

As an accredited consultant in intensive care medicine, Dr Patel is also responsible for the care of patients before and after major/complex surgery and those who are critically unwell. Dr Patel is involved in the outpatient review and optimisation of respiratory health before major surgery.

Dr Patel obtained his PhD from Imperial College London and holds an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer post within the department of anaesthesia, pain medicine and intensive care. His research interests focus on critical illness associated muscle wasting and associated imaging techniques and assessment. Dr Patel has published book chapters and medical manuscripts in high impact journals in respiratory and critical care medicine.

Dr Patel is the faculty tutor for intensive care medicine trainees and unit training lead at Hammersmith Hospital intensive care unit.
