Personal Profile

Mr Shabbir Mohamed is a consultant ophthalmologist based at the University Hospital Birmingham in the West Midlands, who has expertise in managing patients with cataracts, glaucoma, and ocular surface disease, among other eye conditions.
He treats patients with medical and surgical techniques, including the use of laser technology. He is an innovator, developing creative ways of delivering top-quality care to his patients.

He qualified with an honours degree (only awarded to the top 10%) in Medicine from Manchester Medical School (University of Manchester) in 1996, before training in general ophthalmology in the West Midlands. He then completed advanced training in glaucoma and the management of the corneal and external disease. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.

He was appointed as a consultant at the University Hospitals Birmingham Foundation Trust (UHB) in 2007. Since his appointment, he has developed the glaucoma service at UHB using the latest evidence base and has also been instrumental in developing the laser and surgical glaucoma service for glaucoma patients. He has also been a pioneer of minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) including iStent inject implantation.
He is a highly skilled cataract surgeon who regularly performs complex as well as routine cataracts with excellent audited outcomes. He has lower complication rates than national standards despite having a more complex case mix.

He is involved in training the next generation of ophthalmologists and has trained and mentored many trainees who are now consultants nationally and internationally.

He has undertaken extensive research since he was a medical student and has published extensively including often cited landmark papers.
He has demonstrated high patient satisfaction with his service through regular surveys.

His philosophy is that caring for patients is a privilege and is keen to ensure that his practice provides safe and responsible care.

Away from work, he is a family man and enjoys spending time with his wife, Nabila and two daughters, Hawra Fatemah and Abida Zahra. He is an active member of the Birmingham community having lived in Birmingham since 1984. He is also involved as an advisor to the Lady Fatemah Charitable Trust based in London and which operates globally (Charity commission reg. 1072270).
