Personal Profile

Mr Sergio Pagliarini is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon and retinal specialist at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust where he is also the Lead Clinician of macular services.  In addition to this Mr Pagliarini is the clinical lead for the Comprehensive Local Research Network of Ophthalmology for West Midlands (South).

Mr Pagliarini graduated and obtained his specialist certificate in Italy. He then spent two years completing clinical and research fellowships in medical retina at Moorfields Eye Hospital and St Thomas's Hospital, in London. He continued his research at the University of Rome. On returning to the UK he worked as a registrar and took his fellowship exams in order to fully establish his career in the UK. In 2000, prior to taking his first NHS consultant post, he visited several American Universities where he consolidated his specialist knowledge.

Mr Pagliarini has introduced leading edge diagnostic techniques in Coventry and Warwickshire such as optical coherence tomography (OCT), autofluorescence and indocyanine Green Angiography (ICG-A). He has also developed services for age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) first with photodynamic therapy (PDT) and later with anti-VEGF (such as Lucentis and Avastin). His specialist interests are in micro-incision cataract surgery, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular oedema and retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions, central serous retinopathy and inflammation of the eye.  At this private clinic at The Meriden Hospital he offers patients digital retinal photography, fundus fluorescein angiography, laser treatment and intravitreal injections such as Lucentis, Eylea and Avastin.

Mr Pagliarini is part of MEyeS (Midland Eye Surgeons) a partnership of ophthalmic surgeons. MEyeS is based at The Meriden Hospital and provides a comprehensive ophthalmic practice.
