He provides orthopaedic elective services specializing in hips at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital and is an Orthopaedic Trauma Consultant at Poole Hospital. In addition to providing clinical services for patients he runs a well recognized training programme for orthopaedic surgeons both in the UK and internationally to train in hip disorders. He lectures and runs workshops both nationally and internationally in the latest developments of hip surgery and surgical techniques. In 2008 he was appointed by the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement as Clinical Lead in hip and knee replacement in England.
Robert Middleton is involved in research and had held posts at the University of Adelaide and Australia as a visiting clinical lecturer and in 2008 was appointed as a visiting Fellow at Bournemouth Universitiy.
Research
Robert Middleton leads a hip research team at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital specializing in international randomized controlled trials looking into hip replacement. He has published and lectured internationally on computer navigated surgery, minimally invasive surgery and hip resurfacing. He is an expert in rapid improvement, organizational changes and clinical outcomes in hospitals and the healthcare sector. He lectures on Department of Health Workshops and his research work has been presented at conferences around the world.
