Dr Priyanka Chandratre

Dr Chandratre is a consultant Rheumatologist who graduated in 2005 from the University Of Wales College Of Medicine with MBBch and first class honours BSc in Molecular and cellular Biology. She completed foundation and core medical training in West and East Midlands respectively. She started Rheumatology registrar training in Liverpool and subsequently gained an academic fellowship from the NIHR School for Primary Care Research to undertake a doctoral thesis at Keele University researching the Health Related Quality of Life in Gout.

After completing her Rheumatology training, Dr Chandratre returned to the West Midlands and has been a consultant at Sandwell & West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust since March 2017.  Dr Chandratre has received the “Clinical Excellence Award” in 2019 for her services to the Rheumatology department and SWBH NHS trust in general.

She is a general rheumatologist and has expertise in a range of Rheumatological conditions.  She performs a wide range of joint and soft tissue injections.  Her special interests are in auto-inflammatory diseases such as crystal arthritis and Behcet's syndrome.  She is developing into the role of the lead for the National Centre of Excellence for Behcet's Disease. 

She is also the lead for Community rheumatology and the Medical infusion unit. She has previously served as a Medical Examiner for the trust, which promotes learning from deaths. She has published in peer-reviewed journals and presented nationally and internationally. Her current research is investigating the prevalence and incidence of Behcet's disease in the UK. In addition, she is a tutor for medical students in years 3 and 4.  Dr Chandratre also actively engages in providing clinical teaching to allied health professionals, junior colleagues and GPs (peer led teaching).

Dr Chandratre enjoys cooking, music and sports.

Dr Chandratre has written the gout guidelines for INSPIRE, BSR Primary Care network.  She has also written the chapter on crystal arthritis in the EULAR compendium textbook.

Dr Chandratre is involved in research and having completed the ‘Prevalence of Behcet’s disease in adults in England: A pilot retrospective observational study’ based at the Birmingham National Centre for excellence for Behcets, she has secured funding from Behcets UK and SWBH NHS Trust to conduct a nationwide study of the prevalence and incidence of Behcets.
