Personal Profile
Nicola Smith graduated from St George's Hospital Medical School, London in 1989 where she was awarded a Medical Research Council grant for her intercalated BSc in Immunology. She trained in general medicine, obtaining her MRCP in 1992 and subsequently specialised in genitourinary medicine at St Thomas Hospital and at the world-renowned unit at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital where she was appointed Consultant in 1998.
She has undertaken research at the prestigious Chester-Beatty Laboratories of the Royal Marsden Hospital and published research papers on all aspects of sexual health including the medical management of vulval pre-cancer, the transmission of HHV-8 and HTLV-1 and is the senior author of the British guidelines on the management of HIV-2 infection. Her research has taken her to Europe, Africa and America where she has addressed international scientific meetings.
She has a strong belief in holistic healthcare and the concepts of sexual health and patient empowerment.
Doctor Smith's clinical expertise includes all aspects of sexually acquired infections and her special interests include:
- Vulval disease including chronic itch, pain and dyspaerunia
- Chronic discharge
- Genital dermatoses in men and women
- Recurrent herpes
