Mr Michael Karski

Mike Karski joined Wrightington Hospital as a consultant in Orthopaedic surgery with a special interest in Foot & Ankle surgery in 2009. He treats a wide variety of foot and ankle conditions, with his surgical practice ranges from toe surgery to ankle replacement. He has a special interest in sports injuries of the foot and ankle, and was Honorary Orthopaedic Surgeon to Blackburn Rovers Football Club for 5 years. He regularly treats elite professional athletes from many sports including professional football.

Mr Karski’s research interest in ankle replacement surgery includes him being Primary investigator on the Wrightington site, in a nationally funded multi-centre randomised controlled clinical trial of ankle replacement versus ankle arthrodesis and in a clinical research project at Wrightington regarding outcome measures. Previous research in this area has been published in the British Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. He has also implemented an enhanced recovery protocol (enabling earlier mobilisation and discharge) for people having ankle replacement surgery.

Mr Karski is regularly invited to teach on National and International courses regarding foot and ankle surgery including surgery for foot and ankle sports injuries and ankle replacement surgery.

Mr Karski specialises exclusively in foot and ankle surgery. His NHS practise in Wrightington includes managing complex tertiary referral patients. He performs a higher number of ankle replacements per year than the national average for individual surgoens (National Joint Registry data)

He regularly performs complex specialist surgery including ankle replacement, revision ankle replacement, correction of foot and ankle deformities. He regularly treats sports and trauma injuries of the foot and ankle, including managing these injuries in professional athletes.
