Personal Profile

"I've been around the block', says Mendall, which is why many turn to him for a second opinion. He performs a range of therapeutic and diagnostic procedures to understand symptoms which make lives a misery, particularly inflammatory bowel disease and other bowel disorders".

Dr Mendall qualified from Cambridge University in 1982 and the Middlesex Hospital in 1985 with distinction. His specialist gastroenterology training was undertaken at Guy’s and St George’s Hospitals where he undertook his research.  He was appointed Consultant Gastroenterologist at Croydon University Hospital in 1995 and Senior Lecturer at St George’s Medical School. He was elected to Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians in 1998. Dr Mendall is the Endoscopy Director at Croydon University Hospital and the London Strategic Health Authority representative for the British Society of Gastroenterology. He is a Fellow of the American Gastroenterology Association and sits on a number of regional and national committees.

Dr Mendall has more than 70 original publications and has written and contributed to a number of books.  My main areas of research have been into dyspepsia, irritable bowel, inflammatory bowel disease (including the effect of diet on Crohn’s disease) and the body’s response to inflammation.  More recently his research interests have been into the effects of obesity on a range of gut disorders and into the pathogenesis and dietary treatment of inflammatory bowel disease.

His main areas of clinical interest are diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, cancer, dyspepsia, irritable bowel and inflammatory bowel disease.  Dr Mendall has extensive experience in performing upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy, both diagnostic and therapeutic, ERCP (endoscopic bile duct therapy), capsule endoscopy, oesophageal manometary and pH recording and oesophageal, duodenal and biliary stenting. He is a trainer in diagnostic and therapeutic  upper and lower GI endoscopy and ERCP.

Dr Mendall works with dedicated GI radiologists, a specialist GI histopathologist, upper and lower Gi surgeons and Gi dieticians.
