Personal Profile

Mr Makarand Oak did his training in obstetrics and gynaecology in London and Manchester teaching hospitals and was appointed consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist in late 80s in the British Army.  He returned to the NHS and held consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist appointments in Whipps Cross and Royal Free Hospital London and Wishaw General Hospital Lanarkshire Scotland.

He is now in full time private practice at The London Independent Hospital where he sees NHS as well as private patients. He is also the appointed Clinical Chair at The London Independent Hospital; where his focus is to drive the continual improvement of patient care.

Mr Oak has worked in a diversity of professional, cultural, and organisational settings and has had the privilege of working alongside many nationalities in the Former Republic of Yugoslavia through UN Protection Force.  He has deep understanding of women’s health, their needs, and expectations.  He understands the value of empowering his patients with information that is easy to understand, enabling them to make the right choice of management for their condition. 

Mr Oak was Associate Medical Director in Mid Essex NHS Trust Chelmsford and was the lead for clinical audit and clinical risk management; two important pillars of clinical governance.

He believes in decision making with patients and as such informed consent is of great interest to him. He has developed information consent papers for gynaecological procedures that he performs.

He is fully registered with the General Medical Council (UK) and keeps up to date with continuous professional development and annual appraisal requirements.

His special interests are gynaecological endocrinology, pelvic pain, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, infertility, benign gynaecological surgery, minimal access surgery, vaginal surgery and reversal of sterilisation.

He has undertaken numerous research and audit projects and has published and presented in national and international journals. He has reviewed scientific papers for British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and British Medical Journal.

Mr Oak is an independent expert witness for personal injury and clinical negligence cases and has prepared reports for Plaintiffs and Defence lawyers for over 20 years.

Mr Oak has interests in teaching - having regularly provided education to GPs throughout his career.  He has supported various charities, as well as the charitable work of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists through marathon and Kilimanjaro trek.  He has undertaken voluntary teaching for midwives and traditional birth attendants in Malawi and Sikkim in India.  He is a treasurer and Trustee of Charity Children of Kerala.
