Personal Profile

Professor John Ramage qualified in 1978 from London University. He trained in Portsmouth, Brighton, McMaster University, Canada and King’s College, London.

Professor Ramage joined the team in Basingstoke in 1994 as Consultant Physician in Gastroenterology and Hepatology.  He is now Clinical Lead for Gastroenterology and Director of Research and Development at Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Trust.

He is an Honorary Consultant Physician at the Institute of Liver Studies, Kings College Hospital and Lead Clinician for King’s Health Partners NET Centre, which includes Kings, Guys, St Thomas’s, Kent Oncology Centre and Hampshire Hospitals and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Southampton.

Professor Ramage is Examiner for Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of London; Chair of the Research Advisory Group, Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Trust. A member of the Advisory Board for the European NET society; Co-ordinator and Chair of the Wessex Carcinoid Group; A member of the EORTC Quality of Life Group; until recently (2014) Royal College of Physicians Lead for HRG’s and Chair of Expert Working Group for Liver HRG’s for NHS information centre. Member of the Royal College of Physicians Payment by Results committee.

He is a Member of the British Society of Gastroenterology, Member of the British Association for Study of the Liver and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.

Professor Ramage has written over 65 peer reviewed publications and more than 100 abstracts.  He was the corresponding author of the UK guidelines for NET.

He is a regular reviewer of articles for Annals of Oncology, European Journal of Cancer, Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

Professor Ramage is a full time practicing Physician involved in acute medicine and his clinical interests include: Gastro-intestinal Disease, Neuroendocrine Tumours, Cancer Diagnosis, Colitis, Coeliac Disease, Hepatology and Liver Disease, Capsule endoscopies.

He is an experienced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopist performing upper GI endoscopy, banding of varices, dilatations, ERCP, colonoscopy and polypectomy; liver biopsies and capsule endoscopies and has reported more than 500 capsule endoscopies.

His research includes Quality of Life in neuroendocrine and other liver cancers. Further interests are in personalised medicine in liver cancers and early diagnosis of GI cancers generally.
