Qualified from Nottingham University Medical School in 1997, trained in Nottingham & Derby before completing the Upper Limb Fellowship at the Wrightington Upper Limb Unit in 2008.
Mr Geoghegan is the clinical lead for shoulder and elbow surgery at The Nottingham Shoulder & Elbow Unit (NSEU), Nottingham City Hospital & the clinical lead for shoulder trauma at the East Midlands Major Trauma Centre, QMC. Mr Geoghegan performs primary, complex and revision shoulder arthroplasty in the young and elderly, receiving tertiary referrals from other shoulder specialists. Mr Geoghegan has a very large arthroscopic, arthroplasty & trauma practice.
He is a Member of the National Centre for Sports & Exercise Medicine (NCSEM) Unit, Loughborough University where he holds a shoulder & elbow clinic, reviewing elite athletes with sports injuries.
Mr Geoghegan has active roles in audit, research & teaching. He is a Specialist Trainer in T&O & Higher Surgical Trainer for the NSEU Fellowship Trainees. Research interests include rotator cuff tears, shoulder injuries in athletes, shoulder fractures & shoulder arthroplasty. He is a Clinical Investigator (CI) for a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) shoulder replacement study & will be a CI for two further NIHR shoulder surgery studies in 2019. Mr Geoghegan lectures & demonstrates surgical techniques in shoulder surgery in the UK & Europe. Mr Geoghegan has been invited to give Instructional Course (Coventry 2017) & Masterclass Lectures (Glasgow 2018) for the British Elbow & Shoulder Society & the British Orthopaedic Association (Birmingham 2018).
Mr Geoghegan performs over 500 surgical cases per year & monitors outcomes. Mr Geoghegan is a high volume shoulder arthroplasty surgeon with 158 primary & revision shoulder replacements recorded in the National Joint Registry between April 2014 & March 2017.
Mr Geoghegan works closely with his Nottingham Shoulder & Elbow Consultant Colleagues to provide expert shoulder & elbow assessment & treatment.
