Personal Profile

Mr Jain Bhaskara Pillai graduated from Medical School in 1992 from Kerala, India. He has amassed a truly international education, experience and outlook. Born and schooled in the State of Brunei up to GCE 'O' Levels, his higher specialist training in Cardiac Surgery was in the North East Deanery at the Regional centre at Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne from 1999. This was consolidated in Canada at Toronto General Hospital (Dr Tirone David and team) and then expanded in the USA.

In the USA he had the opportunity to train in the inspirational and cutting-edge institution, the Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minnesota), which was also the birthplace of the first commercially successful heart-lung machine (Mayo-Gibbon; 1955) that ushered in ‘routine’ Open-Heart Surgery.

In New York, he trained in one of his areas of interest, namely complex thoracic aorta surgery for aneurysm and dissection. He has also received introductory training in advanced heart failure surgery with ventricular assist devices (VAD) and the total artificial heart (CardioWest). He passed the Cardiac Surgery board examinations of the UK and Canada.

Mr Pillai was first appointed as a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon in 2008. He joined the University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire in 2011. He ensures the best possible outcomes for his patients by underpinning his daily care with a personal presence and meticulous attention to detail.

His skill in coronary artery bypass grafting and aortic valve replacement has translated to very low mortality rates. His expertise in thoracic aorta surgery includes aortic root replacement, ascending aorta replacement and total aortic arch replacement with advanced dedicated brain protection strategies. He has a surgical lead role in post-operative intensive care management.

Jain enjoys spending time with those who seek his care, prioritising the patient and their experiences during their hospital journey. He will take time in the OPD to provide clarity on the surgical condition, explain the operation and calm the natural anxieties associated with any open-heart surgical procedure.

With a Masters in Medical Education and a meritorious academic record, he appreciates that transferable knowledge underpins any safe clinical environment. He is dedicated to creating Consultant-led interactive teaching and learning opportunities to ensure the best team environment.

A private person in his free time, he finds relaxation by returning to his childhood passion for high fidelity music and his favourite musicians, including Sting and Mark Knopfler from Newcastle upon Tyne.
