Training and Appointment
He completed his post graduate degree (MD Pathology) at B.J. Medical College, Pune University in 2002 and then worked in Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital, Mumbai, India for a couple of years before moving to the UK. He then undertook speciality training in Histopathology at Hammersmith/ Imperial College Hospital and Royal Marsden Hospital in London, before finally attaining the Fellowship of Royal College of Pathologists in 2007.
Dr Bagwan has been a Consultant Histopathologist at Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford for the last 12 years. He is the Clinical Director/ Associate Medical Director of Cellular Pathology at Berkshire Surrey Pathology Services, which is a joint venture of four NHS Trusts and five hospitals in the UK. It provides pathology diagnostic services to the counties of Surrey and Berkshire.
Research and Publications
Dr Bagwan has been involved in various national and international clinical trials supporting the pathology part of the trial within the trust. Over the years, he has established collaborative networks between the Pathology department and Kingston University, PGMS, University of Surrey and MRC, OCCAMS Cambridge on various projects and these have lead to at least 50 publications in various high impact journals.
Over the last few years, Dr Bagwan has been a member of the Guideline Development Group, preparing and writing NICE-accredited guidelines on the management of mucosal melanoma (as part of Melanoma Focus project). In addition, he is the Royal College Examiner for FRCPath exam and MRCS surgical exam.
Current Practice
Dr Bagwan has developed expertise in reporting medical liver biopsies and provides reporting service for various target molecules such PDL-1, microsatellite instability and HER2 analysis. He is also the clinical advisor to the molecular pathology department at Royal Surrey County Hospital.
