Personal Profile

Dr Iyad Ismail is a Respiratory Consultant, graduating from Jordan University of Science & Technology in 2000, after being awarded a merit scholarship throughout medical school by the United Nations (UNRWA). He completed his training in the UK (CCT) in respiratory and general medicine in 2014 and he complemented that with a fellowship in interventional procedures from Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.

Dr Ismail was appointed at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and started working from February 2015. Since then he has thrived to introduce innovative practice in respiratory medicine including remote monitoring of sleep patients, a dedicated outpatient pleural disease clinic, ambulatory management of pneumothorax and outpatient non-invasive ventilation (NIV) set ups. He was appointed as a lung cancer lead in December 2015 at Good Hope Hospital, part of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and has made a big impact on the local lung cancer pathway to deliver high quality care to local patients.

Dr Iyad Ismail’s overseas experience has helped him work in the NHS in many ways. Working in Jordan, a country known for its limited resources, meant he had to provide best and safest possible patient care with the available logistics.

Dr Ismail is constantly self-critical of his practice against patient outcomes. This has helped him develop and refine both his skills and knowledge.

In Dr Ismail’s leisure time, he enjoys playing tennis with his son and value’s family time. He has family members in 4 different countries (Jordan, America, Bahrain and UAE) which keeps his life interesting. He also enjoys watching football and strongly supports Liverpool FC.
