Personal Profile
After studying medicine in Dundee and practicing in and around Dundee for a couple of years, Mr Carmichael moved to the West Midlands for his SHO rotation. Mr Carmichael did his Orthopaedic training on the Birmingham rotation, during which he covered the full range of orthopaedics. At the end of this he did a 6-month foot and ankle fellowship. During his training, Mr Carmichael was a trauma surgeon at the Isle of man TT races.
Mr Carmichael’s first consultant post was Nottingham in 2006, and in 2008 he moved to Rotherham where he was appointed as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a special interest in Foot and Ankle Surgery.
In 2009 Mr Carmichael became the Clinical Director for the Orthopaedic Department in Rotherham. The department comprises not only orthopaedics but also podiatry and orthotics as well as rheumatology. During his tenure, he oversaw the expansion of the department with the addition of 2 new arthroplasty surgeons and the creation of an upper limb unit. He was actively involved in the design and creation of both a theatre admissions unit and 2 new clean air theatres in Rotherham. In addition, when the new emergency department was created, he designed the new plaster room and fracture clinic layout. At this time, Mr Carmichael was also the trust trauma lead and, as such, co-ordinated the trauma services within the trust and ran the local trauma committee. He also sat on the regional Trauma network committee setting up and running the south Yorkshire trauma network. He was actively involved in co-ordinating the setting up of the regional trauma centres and trauma units, and co-ordinating logistics with the ambulance service.
In 2013, Mr Carmichael was appointed as the Director for Surgery for Rotherham NHS Trust. The division of surgery comprised all of the surgical specialties with the exception of gynaecology, theatres and anaesthetics including sterile services, endoscopy and ITU. At the same time, he maintained both his clinical and teaching practices all be it at a slightly reduced level.
Since stepping down form this role, Mr Carmichael was the interim lead for 2 years for the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw paediatric surgery network. This co-ordinates the activity of all the hospitals in the network to ensure consistency and high quality care across all sites, and Mr Carmichael was instrumental in leading the initial process.
Special Interests
During his training and as a consultant, Mr Carmichael has always had an interest in sports medicine. He was on the medical commission for British Gymnastics for a number of years, setting up the annual fitness reviews and rules and regulations around training, competitions, etc. He was the team doctor on several occasions for internationals, particularly with Romania, and was the chief medical officer at the European sports Aerobics Championships at the NEC in Birmingham and the World Trampolining championships in 1999.
At the 2002 commonwealth games, Mr Carmichael was the venue medical manager at the MEN arena, particularly for the netball. This involved co-ordinating the medical services for the whole venue, incorporating medical, ambulance and paramedic volunteers.
In 2003, Mr Carmichael was the trauma surgeon as the World Indoor Athletics championships at the ICC in Birmingham. This involved being on the field of play responding to immediate injuries amongst the athletes
In 2005, Mr Carmichael was the medical Director for the 39th International Children’s Games in Coventry. This is an International Olympics Committee event and the children’s equivalent of the Olympics. This involved designing, setting up and running the medical services for the event across several sites, and liaising with the local hospitals, arranging transport and co-ordinating repatriation as necessary.
Teaching and Training
Mr Carmichael has always been interested in training. Throughout his medical career and as a consultant, Mr Carmichael has always been interested in teaching. He regularly teaches medical students and is an examiner for both the phase 2 and finals exams. He has been an ATLS instructor and interviews for the national orthopaedic training post interviews each year.
He has been involved with training physicians associates and is an examiner for their final examinations. He has published in peer-reviewed journals and has written journal articles on clinical examination.
