Personal Profile

Mr Khaira was born in India but has lived in the UK since the age of 7. All of his education has been based here. After Primary School in Birmingham, he went to Handsworth Grammar School and always knew he wanted to pursue a career in medicine. Mr Khaira completed his medical degrees from Cambridge and Oxford Universities.

He started work as a junior doctor in 1988 and decided he wanted to be a surgeon. Since then he has worked in the West Midlands and had broad training as Surgical Registrar. He took 2 years out to do research and completed his thesis in the general effects of exercise in patients with arterial vascular disease. He gained his MD from Birmingham University. He trained in General and Vascular Surgery and was appointed as a consultant at Good Hope Hospital in 1999.

He now works for University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust. During his time as a Consultant, Mr Khaira has been a great proponent of day case surgery and especially hernia and varicose veins surgery under local anaesthetic. For many years he taught other surgeons on hernia surgery under local anaesthetic. He also wrote a booklet for the British Association of Day Surgery on that topic.

Mr Khaira is married to a local GP and they have three grown-up children. Two of them are also doctors and the third is a broadcast journalist. He is also a grandfather. His spare time is taken up helping look after his granddaughter. Mr Khaira has a passion for classic cars and built a kit car in the past. He likes hiking holidays and is also learning to ski.
