His more specialised gastroenterology training has included work in a number of North West Hospitals including Hope Hospital and Manchester Royal Infirmary. Dr Banait’s areas of expertise include inflammatory bowel disease, the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), dyspepsia and reflux (including the management of Barrett's oesophagus), peptic ulcer disease, disordered bowel function, the investigation of iron deficiency, and hepatology. He is an experienced endoscopist in upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy (gastroscopy and colonoscopy with ileoscopy) as well as ERCP (a camera test used to look at the biliary tree and remove stones and insert drains into the bile duct). He also inserts stents into the gullet or small bowel to relieve obstruction, treat narrowing of the gullet and insert feeding tubes. This is in addition to the treatment of gastrointestinal emergencies such as peptic ulcer or variceal bleeding.
His research was carried out at Manchester University (1997-99) and examined the management of dyspepsia and upper gastrointestinal tract symptoms. He has also published a number of papers covering a wide variety of gastroenterology related subjects throughout his training and has continued to do so as a consultant.
Dr Banait is available to see patients with any gastrointestinal disorder/symptom such as indigestion, swallowing problems, abdominal pain, diarrhoea/constipation, weight loss, iron deficiency anaemia and possible/diagnosed liver disease. He performs or has access to all the techniques used to confirm gastrointestinal disorders and when the need arises, cancer management.
