Mr Gavin Marsh is an Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon who qualified from the University of London.

He has worked at several hospitals in London including The Marsden, Guy’s Hospital, St Mary's, Charing Cross Plastics Unit and the NEThames Neurosurgery unit. Mr Marsh completed his postgraduate training at King’s College Hospital and the RNOH Stanmore.

Mr Marsh was then awarded a fellowship in Spinal Surgery at the RNS Hospital Sydney with Professor Taylor. He has worked in South London since 1995 and has research interests in disc replacement, bone grafting and fusion alternatives, plus minimally invasive spinal surgery.

He has developed a patient centred practice offering the full choice of up-to-date treatments, after a thorough discussion about alternatives. He contributes to the national Spinal Registry and to the private sector information service PHIN where his results show excellent outcomes and over 8000 surgeries performed. He is fully appraised and revalidated and up to date with mandatory training.

Circle Health Group recently appointed him the local Clinical Chairman and he has joined the senior management team at the hospital allowing him to contribute to the running of the whole unit. This role allows him to use his experience that he gained as Medical Director of Croydon University NHS Trust, until he moved to Guys Hospital for new challenges.

His treatment principles focus on rapid rehabilitation combined with improved pain relief for acute sciatica and back or neck spasms. He works closely with a number of local practitioners in the field of spinal neurotherapy including leaders in Physiotherapy, Osteopathy and Chiropractic therapies. Only then does he consider surgical solutions and they are of the most minimally invasive nature, leading to short hospital stays and rapid recovery and return to work.

He regularly performs microdiscectomies and mini lumbar spinal decompressions, for narrowing of the spine due to degeneration and spondylolisthesis or inherited congenital stenosis. He has also introduced key hole fusion surgery from Guys (Nuvasive kit), coblation disc surgery, chymopapain, Intradiscal Electrothermal Therapy (IDET), laser discectomy, soft stabilisation non fusion surgery eg Coflex, Wallis, Diem and Dyneses systems.

Adult Scoliosis deformity surgery has gained popularity and some success. Mr Marsh has performed a number of corrective surgeries for adult scoliosis deformities which involved the use of ALIF, XLIF and percutaneous rods posteriorly. He can therefore prepare patients for such a treatment and set expectations, as this is not a process to be undertaken lightly.

There are a number of experts in the management of chronic pain disorders locally who work with Mr Marsh in a team effort to support the patient through extremely difficult times. He offers an empathic approach and onward referrals, for specialist care that he has observed at Guys Hospital with great effect, such as second-generation Spinal Cord Stimulators.

Shirley Oaks Hospital has an open MRI scanner and patients find that very reassuring. The whole imaging department is about to undergo a state-of-the-art refit allowing intervention on a day case basis and opening up new opportunities for treatment in an ambulatory care mode.

He keeps himself fit, plays golf and tennis regularly. More recently, he has enjoyed walking in the countryside and gardening.
