Personal profile

Mr Mahon graduated from Birmingham Medical School in 1991 with a BSc in Pharmacology and an honours degree in Medicine (MBChB (hons)).

He moved to London for his basic and higher surgical training where he obtained unrivalled experience in the specialist departments of the Hammersmith Hospital, St Georges Hospital, King’s College Hospital, UCL and the Middlesex Hospitals.

He was appointed as Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon at Scarborough Hospital in 2004. While at Scarborough he was Clinical Lead for colorectal cancer and Foundation Training Programme Director. He took up a post as Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon at Harrogate District Hospital in 2008.

His clinical interests are in the minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of colorectal disease. He is an expert upper and lower GI Endoscopist. He has extensive experience in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery and performs the vast majority of colorectal resections by a laparoscopic approach. He is also an experienced general surgeon and has interests in hernia and gallbladder surgery. He has an interest in clinical nutrition and is the Trust’s lead for parenteral nutrition.

Mr Mahon held the post of Clinical Lead for general surgery from 2013-2016, during which time he oversaw significant expansion of the general surgical department and implemented many major service developments and improvements, most notably in emergency surgery.

Passionate about training, he is active in teaching and mentoring junior colleagues and allied health professionals.
