Personal Profile

After graduating from Edinburgh University in 1988, Prof Stanley trained in London, Melbourne and Edinburgh, and completed his MD thesis. He took up his current post as a Consultant Gastroenterologist at Glasgow Royal Infirmary in 1999 and was appointed Honorary Professor at the University of Glasgow in 2018. He has numerous local, national and international teaching and training roles and is heavily involved in undergraduate teaching in Glasgow. He has advised SMC and NICE, and is Director of the annual Glasgow-Gastro educational and research Conference and on the organising committee of the annual Edinburgh Advanced Gastroenterology & Hepatology course.

Prof Stanley has active research interests in GI bleeding, endoscopy and chronic liver disease, with several active international research collaborations. He has published over 130 peer-reviewed research papers and several book chapters to date, and has been an invited speaker and performed live endoscopy at numerous national and international meetings. Prof Stanley has been co-author on several UK and European guidelines on various aspects of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He has also been elected to the organising committee of the Scottish Society of Physicians and also several British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) section committees. He was appointed Secretary of the BSG in 2019, and was also elected Vice-President (Medical) of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (RCPSG) in 2019.

He is a founder member of the RCPSG Global Health Group and is heavily involved in a BSG supported endoscopy training project in Malawi (2012-present).
Professor Stanley requires all patients to obtain a referral letter from a GP or Consultant prior to booking an appointment with him.
