Professional Profile
Dr Tarique Al Musa is a Consultant Cardiologist with a wide range of experience in general adult cardiology. He has a special interest in the diagnosis and management of heart failure for which he is clinical lead at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford.
Tarique graduated with clinical distinction from the Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Hospital School of Medicine, London. He undertook cardiology speciality training in South West London and completed his PhD from the University of Leeds with research funded by the British Heart Foundation. He published a number of first-author primary research papers including in circulation.
Dr Al Musa gained Level III accreditation in cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging from the European Society of Cardiology, an independent non-profit association that works to advance the prevention, diagnosis and management of cardiovascular disease and blood vessels, and improve scientific understanding of the heart and vascular system.
Tarique has also completed a fellowship in advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, winning an international clinical case competition at the European Society of Cardiology Heart Failure Congress and passing the ESC HFA heart failure certification exam.
Tarique holds Certified Cardiac Device Specialist recognition from the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners, and performs both simple and complex pacing (ICD, CRT) for advanced heart failure.
Dr Al Musa contains to be actively involved in research with a focus on cardiovascular MRI, heart failure and aortic stenosis.
His work has been published in peer-reviewed journals including Circulation, Heart, BMJ Open, the International Journal of Cardiology and the Journal of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (JCMR).
Tarique’s most recent publication was on “Interaction of stroke volume and myocardial phenotype in patients with severe aortic stenosis referred for intervention,” European Heart Journal Cardiovascular Imaging (February 2021).
Tarique has a regular weekly clinic at Mount Alvernia, where he sees patients for heart failure and breathlessness; chest pain and coronary disease; palpitations / blackouts (syncope); cardiovascular MRI; insertion and review of permanent pacemakers (PPM); implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) - a small battery-powered device placed in a patient’s chest to detect and stop abnormal heartbeats (arrhythmias) and Cardiac Resynchronisation Therapy (CRT), a treatment for heart failure in patients whose ventricles don't contract in a coordinated fashion.
